We all crave inspiration, once in a while; the time to dream, the space to think, the energy to pour into a creative project. We need to recharge, to reassert belief in ourselves and to re-imagine how we see ourselves. We need to laugh, to learn new skills, to be alone when we choose to, to be part of a community when the mood takes us and to reconnect with the natural world. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect place to do all this than in our beautiful Costa Rica!

Northern California Writers' Retreat is a juried retreat for 18 fiction writers, set in Carmel Valley, in the shade of deep-rooted oak trees, the Santa Lucia mountain range as our backdrop. The retreat features one Author-in-Residence--a fiction writer who has published at least one novel who is there to serve as a mentor to our writers--and two Guest Literary Agents, who help lead workshops, offer advice on the publishing industry, and discuss their roles and what they want to see in submissions. Founder and director Heather Lazare also leads a workshop, and discusses her industry experience as a former editor at Penguin Random House and S&S. By bringing together an author, literary agents, and an editor, it is our hope that participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of the publishing industry--as well as a writing partner or two! Come join us as we enter our tenth year!

Wiley’s retreat is for writers who understand that writing is as much about craft as it is creativity.

We’ll spend three hours each morning discussing the differences between scene and narrative summary and the components that make both so valuable to writers (and our readers). We’ll begin by exploring successful scenes by published authors, and then we’ll dive into one another’s work, looking for ways to hone or expand our scenes and summaries. We’ll also respond to various writing assignments that will require us to make informed decisions about what to explore in scene and what to condense in summary.

Phyllis’ writing retreat is for writers of all genres who want to dive into a deeper relationship with their writing in a nurturing group dynamic.

We will spend three glorious hours each morning discussing and discovering the following: roadblocks, hinderances and/or the brick wall that prevent you from developing as a writer, purpose, voice, and style, inward-looking vs action oriented, pacing and flow, and writing as a form of healing.

We will also examine why your story is your story, what makes your story your own, and why you are the only one who can write it.
