4 Inspiring Writing Retreats Across the USA for 2026

Discover Unique Writing Retreats Across the United States

There’s something powerful about stepping away from your everyday life and into a place designed for writing.

A change of landscape often brings a shift in perspective. The quiet of a lakeside morning, the energy of a creative campus, or the wild beauty of a remote setting can open something in your work that’s been waiting for space to emerge. Writing retreats offer more than time, they offer rhythm, community, and the kind of focus that’s hard to find on your own.

Across the United States, there are retreats that meet you in different ways. Some offer solitude and stillness. Others bring workshops, mentorship, and conversation. Whether you’re looking to deepen your craft, reconnect with your voice, or simply make meaningful progress on your work, these four featured retreats are a beautiful place to begin.

Sitka Writers Retreat with John Roedel! May 2-9, 2026

John Roedel is a much loved teacher, writer, poet, memorist, comedian, true heart, dad, dog dad, husband, and friend in this world. If you are familiar with John's writing, you know that he will guide you into the depths of what it means to be human, make risotto, be fragile and wildly brave, find some meaning in ink on page! Bring your writing projects. Bring your openness to new writing. You belong here.

If you seek solace in wild spaces with like minded creatives, this is the retreat for you! With plenty of time for adventure and exploration with or without guides and daily creative writing classes, you will leave this retreat both refreshed and inspired to create your art! Your hosts are kind and generous. The retreat location is one of the premier arts camps in the world and is located in a stunning and picturesque location nestled between old growth forests, mountains, and the North Pacific. Locals are friendly and helpful anywhere you go and it is a challenge to get lost in this island town with one main road stretching for only 14 miles start to end!

Maranacook Lake Writing Retreat, May 9-16, 2026

The Lake Maranacook writing retreat is completely self-directed: I'm around for consultation or ideas or just a conversation over coffee, but this is space for you: to take on a project you've been putting off, to get a new perspective on past work... or to start something entirely new. Because of this, writers of all genres, from nonfiction to poetry, are encouraged to attend. Writing prompts are available if you need something to kick-start your work.

Meals are included in the cost of the accommodations, with breakfast served self-service at your own pace and lunch and dinner enjoyed together with other participants for conversation. Mornings are spent writing, and optional activities are offered in the afternoons—tours of the area, guest speakers, and opportunities for collaboration. In the evenings, anyone who would like to share some of their work with other writers may do so.

Walks in the woods, swimming in the lake, time by the firepit, meditating, and catching up on your reading... it's all available in a beautiful, peaceful setting sure to enhance your writing experience.

Weymouth Writeaway, July 6-13, 2026

Step into a place where storytelling has deep roots. At Weymouth, you’re writing in the same spaces once frequented by literary greats, and this week, the focus turns toward your voice, your stories, and the worlds you’re building for young readers. It’s an inspiring setting for children’s writers looking to reconnect with imagination, clarity, and heart.

Mornings invite quiet, uninterrupted writing in historic rooms filled with light and stillness, the kind of space where picture books find their rhythm, middle-grade stories deepen, and ideas begin to take shape. There’s something about the calm here that makes it easier to access that sense of wonder at the core of writing for children.

Afternoons bring thoughtful workshops and one-on-one consultations, offering guidance to help you refine your work and move it forward. Whether you’re shaping a manuscript or exploring new ideas, the support here is both practical and encouraging.

And throughout it all, there’s community, shared meals, garden walks, and conversations with fellow writers who understand the unique craft of writing for young audiences. It’s a week to step away, tune in, and rediscover the joy of storytelling.
